WHERE AM I?

V:  CARRYING ON WITH OUR BLUE THEME I COVERED THIS PANEL WITH A MAP I GOT FROM THE GOVERNMENT.  LEAVES A LOT OF ROOM FOR CREATIVITY!

BLUE BIRDS

Carlyn added the bird and abstract nests.

Valerie started with blue paint and silver perforated ribbon.

STRINGS OF SORTS

Carlyn said she was challenged but I think she got it...lots of lines.

MONSTER!

Valerie:  I got given this one and it looked like skin to me.

So I made a monster!!!

I took this picture in New York city.

Carlyn added beads, gloss and wool to finish this one.

Water

Took the panel and covered it in layers of tissue paper and added a small framed collage.

Well it is still blue
This piece was inspired by cleaning out the travel first aid kit.  Did not need those bandages anymore so layered them in this piece and then glazed it blue.

Toys were added by Carlyn

I added a vintage Xmas bulb to the feet.

STARRY STARRY NIGHT

CY: Val's delivery of a panel stained in silver-blue and affixed with a blue plastic architectural find stumps me. I feel like I need to add objects but I don't have her kind of cache aside from a few vials of glass beads, so I embedded them in paint. Definitely needs another layer...of something.
Over to you, Val.

Blue metalic paint and cup up chopsticks

Turn it upside down and add paint...looking like a garden

STARRY STARRY NIGHT

V:  WE FELT AFTER THE SECOND TREATMENT THAT IT NEEDED MORE SO I ADDED THESE TEAL GLASS PIECES TO FINISH IT OFF.

Blue grid

CY: Another one that I got started: blue squares of
paint painted in a grid with images from magazines on a blue calico print, then adhered to the panel. Can't wait to see how Val adds to this busy piece.

Valerie loved the colours and collages so just added letters painted silver.

Waxing on...

CY: I got the start on this one - the perfect opportunity to experiment with acrylic medium in creating an encaustic effect. I applied tinted acrylic gel over some fabric flowers I rummaged from my Found Stuff box. Over to you, Val.

WAXING ON

V:  I HAD FUN WITH THIS ONE.  CARLYN'S THICK COVERING OVER FLOWERS MADE ME GO ALL NATURE ON IT.  THESE ANTS WILL MAKE SHORT WORK OF THOSE FLOWERS.

Maps and dreams

CY: Val created a raised ground of blue sand, which reminded me of topography and maps. I added the dotted lines of acrylic paint, following Val's contours. Even though I was thinking of travel routes, someone commented that it seemed related to Aboriginal art.
I think this one is done.

We're feeling BLUE

CY: I don't quite remember when we decided to add a theme to a new series of Co-Lab panels, but I'm glad we landed on 'blue.' Val (as usual) got things going with this photo (iceberg she photographed in Newfoundland) block floating on a blue-d wood grain ground. It immediately resonated 'strange lands' with me, so I pushed that feeling further with some architecture in the form of beading and a decorative 'grille' of acrylic paint.
Is it done, Val? I think it could use another layer....

Tag You're It

Stage 4
C: I was wondering what I was going to do with that oil-on-canvas that I impulsively tore into little squares last year ;)

Stage 3

Stage 3 detail

V:  Added US pennies because I liked how the building on the penny reflects the pattern below the figures, which is actually a building.

Stage 2

C: I added a layer of painted texture UNDER the tag. (Not so easy!)

Stage 1
V: I used metallic paint and a collage on a wardrobe label for first layer.

It's Blue! It's Teal!

stage 2

CY: I was working on layering up a large canvas when I decided to paint my next layer on the teal  and gold-striped panel instead.
Stage 1

Val: I used blue metallic paint and copper tape for the first layer.

Puzzled

Stage 3

CY: The green and black were looking a bit hectic so I washed the whole field in white, enhanced the texture, then added some fabric-backed headlines. There seems to be a relation between the random puzzle pieces and the Twitter universe....

Stage 2
Stage 2 - Val adds the puzzle pieces to my ground of tinted acrylic medium embedded with crayon shavings.

Bramble

Stage 5!
V:  well I had to add a stage 5 as it just was not working for us.  She is a bit scary but finishes it off.  Name?  no idea!
Stage 4

CY: Sometimes the magic works, sometimes it doesn't. Bramble was a fight against less-than-desirable effects - at least on my side. I wanted to enhance the green wire by adding bright green highlights. As when I get highlights in my hair I ended up wondering, 'What was I thinking?!' This one needs a Stage 5, Valerie.

Stage 3
CY: It's a good thing we don't have a Stage 2 pic to post - it was a less-than-successful glob of acrylic medium and crayon. Val neutralized the mucky-coloured texture by layering it over in gold, then adding another bramble layer of fine green wire.

Metallic

Stage 4
CY: Let's recap:
Stage 1: You, Valerie, got this one started by painting a gold ground and adding a Celtic stamp.

Stage 2: Back to me, I liked how the gold highlighted a rusty scrap of log-boom iron (who doesn't have a collection of rusty log-boom iron?)
Stage 2

Stage 3: You laid on one of your signature bullet crosses and I was stumped. How could I connect the stamp and the bullet-on-rusty iron? Then it hit me: more metal! This one definitely took 'TWO.'
(posted by Carlyn)

Stamp

CY: My studio is one big experimental laboratory these days as I grope around to find an entry point into a new painting series. What would happen if I used a doily as a stamp? That's how I ended up laminating the panel with a sheet of stamped foolscap. (What an archaic word....)
Stage 1

Trace of Lace

Stage 4

V....when I got this one back for its final transformation I immediately thought of the maple leaf as the jam jar lid in the middle says made in Canada.  Could not resist using those little flags in the corners and adding a bit more red here and there!

Stage 3

C: Using Val's painted design as a focal point, I started playing with the space between a mandala and banal household objects. Embedded behind an old glass Canada Gem lid, Val's markings seem a little more mysterious.

Stage 3 in progress

Stage 1

CY: I am the lucky recipient of heaps of doilies from someone's mom. I thought this one might make an interesting ground.
Over to you, Valerie :)

Work in Progress

Puzzled, stage 3

VA: Here are three pieces that are on their third rotation so just one more to go.
Crayons, puzzle pieces, wire, medium, rubber stamps and rusty bits....it all becomes part of the process.
